The Best We Could Do

Summary of the story is a woman named Thi Bui, she is a refugee in the war and political instability in Vietnam to come to America in 1970. Bui wrote about the cruel and poisonous images when her family fled from the South of Vietnam, the difficulties they had to face was to rebuild a new life and a society in a strange country. breaking the idea and the nobility of the work of parents, the countless sacrifices, in addition, the story also shows us the stability and some difficult experiences when in the journey she grew up, wanting to escape from her parents and adapt to life in the United States when she was young, she always withdrew and attached to her family, to her homeland culture. In addition, she also talked about her father who was extremely difficult with a lot of poverty, danger and her mother grew up in a poor situation with many views of French colonialism. The story gave me a sympathetic and dangerous look at the people who migrated during the war and reflected to them that war is painful and brutal. The book was extremely graphic and readable, the author explained the details in the book very well, this book must be about the trauma of the war period and the drama in the family how she overcame it. So I felt it was beautiful and touching, I felt like imagining the past by making pictures of the history of immigration and refugees, it was really fascinating.

This Golden State

Marit Weisenberg’s This Golden State tells the story of Natlie, a teenage girl who grew up in a closed and strict community in California and had a very strict and influential mother in soicial. She believed that she was growing up with the best conditions, but gradually she became skeptical about what she had learned and things that were not explained. What happened was that when she learned a few things about her mother’s past, she realized that what she believed was not entirely accurate. So she stepped out of her comfort zone and went in search of the truth and found freedom, because she felt that she was no longer in a place where she felt happy. In her journey to find freedom and freedom, it was extremely difficult, feeling lonely and integrating into a complex society was not easy for her. However, she also learned more about herself, her family and the vast world. After reading the book, I felt the strength and courage of this girl when she sought the truth and stepped out of her comfort zone to find herself and her own happiness. She always knew how to resolve conflicts in her heart. I feel that everyone should live true and honest to themselves, find their own purpose to strive for.

KINGS,QUEENS AND IN-BETWEENS

The story revolves around Nima Kumara-Clark, a teenage girl living in a small town. Nima feels trapped by the limits and norms of society, she is shy and introverted. Her life becomes chaotic after her mother leaves the family, leaving her alone with her family but loving her wholeheartedly. Nima falls in love with her best friend Ginny, but this love is not reciprocated, which makes her sad and confused about her self-esteem. As a lesbian living in a small community, she feels isolated and disconnected from people who can understand her. During a chance event at a drag festival, Nima is introduced to a whole new world – where people are free to express their identity. From here, she begins to explore different aspects of herself through unique encounters, she meets Deidre, a confident and charming drag queen, who becomes a mentor, helping Nima open up and help her make new friends. Gordon is a guy the same age as Nima, cheerful and humorous, and is the bridge that helps her enter this community. Wynn is the person Nima has feelings for, who helps her understand more about love, weakness and courage. After reading the book, I feel that the book has given me a perspective on the LGBT+ community, the book shows that we can completely escape the community and the norms of society. We can be lonely Nima because we do not dare to overcome the norms of society. One message I felt from the book is love and acceptance even when you feel lost in your own world and don’t know your own worth, always thinking that you have to fit in with the norms of society, but we will not be comfortable with that, we should be true to ourselves. Friendship and community are not only places to learn when we are a healthy community, it is not only a place to communicate but also a place to have empathy, learn and heal emotional wounds. Kings, Queens, and In Betweens is a profound novel full of energy and inspiration. This is not only a story about a girl finding herself but also a celebration and respect for the LGBT+ community. The LGBT+ community is the one who needs to be respected more than anyone else because they have lived true to their gender, what they feel comfortable with and what they want. Don’t stop anyone from doing something, don’t say they are strange, because deep down they are still themselves, they always know how to love and help.

Code Talker

The book Code Talker by author Joseph Bruchac is a true historical story of Navajo soldiers who used their language as a secret code during World War II, helping the US military communicate without being deciphered by the Japanese. This is the first time I read this story, it brings me emotions and understanding the cruelty of World War II, the story can highlight the cherished spirits and the story brings a lot of regret, we have to ponder why America has peace like today and the hypotheses about the soldiers who sacrificed on the surface of World War II.

The story is about a boy named Ned Begay when he was living in his hometown, he was discriminated against by the US government and its assimilation policy, but because of his passionate love for his identity, he always kept his traditions and language, when World War II broke out, he joined the US army and became one of the The first Navajo Code Talkers. He made his mark on the battlefield, while in the army he and other Navajo warriors were trained in the most rigorous way, they always kept a fighting stance and they could use their own language to create a difficult code system that the Japanese army had no way to decode because they did not know the Navajo language. Ned and his teammates participated in many important battles in the Pacific, despite facing bombs and guns, hasty meals or hasty meetings on the battlefield, but Ned always kept an optimistic spirit, resilient and always responsible for his teammates, showing us that spirit is also a secondary importance in victory but still determines life on the battlefield. This team spirit helped them succeed in the mission of securing important messages and contributed to the victory of the US army in World War II. They always support each other when they have difficulties to maintain cultural values, Ned always keeps his language even though the world is changing. “Code Talker” is a powerful book, both historical and humane, praising the bravery and great contribution of the large number of Navajo soldiers in the war who sacrificed silently. The idea is only in a documentary that they are our heroes.

In addition, the book also reflects the complexity of indigenous life in a multicultural society, the discrimination of the regime at that time and the challenges Ned faced represent what they had to face in protecting their culture during the war. This is a book that helps us understand a part in resolving the war
